Paula Tabor is an award-winning illustrator and portraitist. Currently, she accepts commissions for book covers, book illustrations, children’s book illustrations, wall decor, and portraiture. Although she will illustrate for all ages, the detailed nature of her work makes it a better fit for older kids. Specifically, her style suits middle-grade, young adult, and adult audiences best.
Furthermore, Paula is an enthusiastic history nerd who enjoys researching correct visual content. Consequently, she excels at creating period-specific or subject-specific imagery with authentic details. Whether you need historically accurate costumes or culturally appropriate settings, she ensures every element is researched and accurate.
Her Digital Art Process
Although Paula is a digital illustrator, she creates all her art by hand. In fact, she draws on her laptop using a Wacom tablet and stylus. She works primarily in Adobe Photoshop. However, she uses Krita when a paint or pencil/graphite media style is required.
For her signature Art Nouveau style of illustration and portraiture, she draws lines using a pen brush in Photoshop. Then, she uses a lasso tool to define areas of flat color. Subsequently, she pastes them on layers to build depth and dimension. Depending on skin tone or the reference photo’s contrast levels, a skin tone can be built up from three to eleven different flat areas of color. This technique effectively shows shading and depth.
Respecting Copyright and Creating Original Work
Paula does use photos for reference in her art, portraits, and commissioned illustrations. However, she respects photographers’ intellectual property rights. Therefore, every image, even portraits, is created from at least three different photographs. As a result, this makes her work entirely her own original creation.
